Top of The Heap
As expected Street Sense opened his 3-year-old season with a huge effort in the Tampa Bay Derby. He had to earn his victory as he battled through the stretch with Any Given Saturday. I believe both horses move to the top of the 3-year-old class at this point with both giving perhaps the best prep race this season. We'll have to see how they bounce back from this effort with Street Sense slated to run just 1 more race before his Derby effort. Any Given Saturday will also have 1 more prep however that will be his 3rd this season while Street Sense will only have 2 preps in total.

Jerry Bailey on ESPN seemed worried that this race might have taken too much out of Street Sense for his first race back. Any thoughts on that?
Yeah, Bailey makes a good point. Due to Street Sense running such a huge race off a layoff he is a great bounce candidate next time out where this race was just too taxing and he won't be able to move forward off this last race. This will show up in his next effort - if at all. However if he doesn't move forward off this big effort in his next start then he can still move forward in his following race which will be his 3rd off the layoff and that would also be the Derby. So we'll have to wait and see. But at this point he ran a huge race and most likely the best prep of any other 3-year-olds besides AnyGivenSaturday.
