Watching the stretch run of the Haskell it was fairly evident that
Curlin has the look of a very tired horse.
Keep in mind that he didn't race as a 2-year-old so he didn't have a lot of 'bottom" headed into his Triple Crown campaign. And the battle against
Rags to Riches in the Belmont also taxed him greatly. So it's no surprise he has fallen off.
Curlin's connestions are going to have to re-think the rest of his year. If the deired race is the Breeders' Cup then they might not be able to rest their horse sufficiently if they plan on getting him a tune-up race say 3 or 4 weeks before the BC. If not, it will be very hard to get 1 1/4 miles at that level coming in cold, off a layoff.
In my view, they are up against it no matter which way you look at it.
The connections of
Street Sense are looking pretty sharp right now. They have a reletively fresh horse headed into the Travers with a winning prep race already over the track.
Emerging star
Any Given Saturday is now showing the talent he promised to have earlier in his career. He has been refreshed from his Triple Crown push and his races are being spaced very well.
It's going to be a very interesting finish to a great year of racing - Stay tuned!
