Ok, so Big Brown barely beat a very weak field in the Haskell. Desormeaux must have hit him 50 times from the turn to the finish. Left-handed, Right-handed, the only thing he didn't do was kick him with his spurs!
So what does this victory prove. To me it says that Big Brown didn't lose the Belmont because of some unknown physical problem. He was simply tired from his Derby and Preakness efforts and on top of that he wasn't trained correctly in between the Preakness and Belmont. And that's why he lost - bottom line.
And today Big Brown was all out - life and death to beat a field that was pretty poor. And I hate to label any horse poor because I hate to knock any horse that gives an effort but if I am being honest they were a poor bunch.
Honestly, he really should have run in The Travers. If he wanted to prove something or show how good he is and prove that The Belmont was a fluke he should have run against a better/deeper field and at a classic distance. He could have said "here I am, come and get me".
The only thing he proved in his poor showing in The Haskell is that he has no physical problems and that The Belmont wasn't a fluke. He has now made everyone think that he simply might not be as good as first thought.
I mean realistically his last 2 races give no indication of any brilliance and or greatness. Further, none of the horses he beat in The Derby have come back with anything to mention as far as brilliance or even ability. So who did he really ever beat?
Now this situation could get even uglier because one can argue that Big Brown has now become a regular racehorse simply because in his last 2 races he has not been given any steroids or any mystery medications.
I mean based on his trainer's reputation this had to be said and brought out. And perhaps his trainer and owner realize that Big Brown can't go back to his Derby and Preakness efforts without the drugs.
However maybe they thought that he could possibly still be good enough to beat a lesser field in the Haskell and on a track that would favor his running style rather than try and beat a better field at a longer distance in the Travers.
Hmm...I think we have seen the last of Big Brown!
