The Travers - The Woodward - Rachel Alexandra

Rachel Alexandra is skipping the Travers to run in the Woodward. This decision helps Rachel in 3 different ways.

1-It gives her a little more recovery time from her last effort. Not that the last effort was over taxing but her campaign is getting long. This season she has battled at the longest distances she has ever run and against males. So her campaign could start to drain her a bit.

2-The field in the Travers figures to be tougher as compared to the field she would have faced in The Woodward.

3-Perhaps the biggest tactical advantage to running in The Woodward instead of The Travers is the race distance. The Woodward is 1 1/8 miles and the Travers is 1 1/4 miles. The shorter distance is a great advantage for Rachel and her running style.

Seems like Rachel's connections made a very smart decision. What do you think?

Saratoga's $500,000 Pick-4

Trying to shed some light in today's $500,000 guaranteed Pick-4 at Saratoga I came up with a few suggestions that should help.

Race 8
Very wide open event to start the Pick-4 as several have a chance to win. If you take a look at the wet track rating of each horse (Tomlinson Ratings) in their past performance boxes it shows they all have wet track breeding/ability so this is a useless stat once again.
Discreetly Mine moves up on the wet going. Gathering Cloud has trained very quickly. Flexthegoldenpipes also moves up on a wet surface. Super Saver will be finishing strongly.

Race 9
Very wide open race and got even tougher with the rains. Hammock, Xodo, Yankee Empire and Rock in Bage all figure with a shot to land the win in this spot.

Race 10
Still can't see anyone beating the top 3 contenders even with the wet going. Wynning Ride, Don't Forget Gill and Funny Moon

Race 11
The 3 horses in here that seem to have the most upside are Marula, Facetious and Mythical Yarn. And in order to finish off the Pick-4 confortably we now have to include Freedom Rings, who came back from his layoff in a good way and has run well over deeper/wet grass surfaces.

Good Luck to All!

Late Pick-3 & Pick-4 Selections & Analysis

Race 6 - MSW
(6) Billions Boy – Was added to our Horses to Watch list right after finishing 2nd in his debut on July 11. He was within striking distance early in a pretty quickly run race and rallied well into the turn as he was still getting to the winner late. Another positive from that effort is the fact that the horse that finished 3rd that day came back to win. Billions has had 5 weeks to recover from his debut effort and has worked well. He figures to come back with another big effort today.

(7) Pendulum – Has the advantage of having already run 2 races so he should have more “bottom” to his level of conditioning. However, although both career races are good, he comes back here in this spot in just 11 days from his last effort. That usually is not enough time to turn a 2-year-old around because although the last effort was good he still might need more time to recover from that effort. His numbers are there and if he improves off his 2 career starts he will be very tough to beat. However can he improve off just 11 days is the question?

(9) Bridgetown – Turned in a very good debut effort back in June for a trainer that has very good stats for horses making their 2nd career starts as well as horses running in turf sprints. He has been working well and figures to improve off his debut effort however the fact that he hasn’t raced in 49 days is a bit of a concern.

Race 7 – OPC
(3) Radical Sabbatical – Turned in 3 very good efforts in his last 3 starts and has had a freshening before headed to Saratoga. He has worked very well for a trainer that knows how to crank them up for a big effort.

(97) Valtrus – Has turned in a deceptively good campaign this spring as he fought out some tough efforts at several different turf courses. He figures to return with another big effort.

(2) Pick Six – Turned in 2 very good efforts in his last 2 starts and figures to be on or very near the early lead in a rather pace-less field. Right now he has been running at his best and has to be respected for that especially against a suspect group.

Race 8 – Hall of Fame Grade II
(1)Straight Story – Looks like a tiger on grass as he has had 4 career starts on grass and has 2 wins and missed twice by a head. He comes out of 2 graded stakes and although he is a state-bred he has proven that he can run with at least this bunch.

(8) Courageous Cat – Went from breaking his Maiden to beating a stakes field home about 3 weeks ago. Seems to have a lot of upside and has to be respected because we don’t know his top yet. Drew a tough post and might be used up a little too much in the early going.

(2) No Inflation – Has only 1 grass win but has battled in every grass start and against some very talented and deep fields and on several different courses. He has early speed and the ability to rate. He has drawn a great post position in this spot.

Race 9 – Claiming
(5) Four Star Bo – Has a win over turf and finds himself back on grass after several tries on dirt. Efforts in June were solid and might be meeting weaker in this spot.

(7) Into the Wind – Shipped and dropped in pursuit of an easy spot and made a strong move but hung late. That was his 2nd off the layoff and with that race under his belt he should be able to give his top effort here.

(10) Find the Wire – Turned in a big effort last time out over a course that was favoring early speed that day. He should improve off this last effort.

(2) Holiday Trip – Has had a race over this track which was his 1st off a layoff and should improve off that initial effort.

Book Signing Thursday at Saratoga

The team behind NickBorg.com that does all the grunt work and brain work have written a book entitled "Off To a Flying Start". It's an illustrated gathering of commonly used phrases that got their start at the races. It really is a very clever and enjoyable read.

Cassandra Cook and Bill Tivenan will be signing copies of their publication at Borders, located at 395 Broadway in Saratoga Springs on Thursday evening from 7 - 9pm.

I invite everyone to go by and say hello, check out a copy of "Off to a Flying Start" and talk horses with them. They will most likely have some insights into Friday's card.

Be there and enjoy these 2 great people.

Themes of Some Top Weekend Races

Given his last 3 efforts, it seems as though Gio Ponti has evolved into the top turf specialist in the country. Gio figures to turn in another big effort on Saturday in the Arlington Million.

The Whitney Handicap at Saratoga has a 7 horse field and it seems as though each contender has a shot at landing the top prize. Commentator, the main early speed, drew the outside post. Will he clear early? Will anyone run with him early?

The Test, a springboard in the past for many great Fillies launching their carers into high gear drew a field of 8 and here again several horses have a legit chance of winning. Cat Moves is unbeaten in 3 races however the waters get deeper in this spot. Heart Ashley seems bent on having the early lead. Will anyone run with her early?

Of course these are only a few of the themes presented this weekend in Thoroughbred Racing. But Either way, at Home or Trackside, Enjoy this Great Weekend of Racing!
